The Battle Of Fromelles Fought In World War I

The Battle of Fromelles during World War I began on 19th July 1916 and concluded the next day. The assault began close to the village of Fromelles in N.France and was intended to take the emphasis from the battle that was taking place fifty miles to the south at the Battle of the Somme which had began on 1st July 1916.

History has implied this particular battle was quite useless since it cost countless men their lives for little purpose. British and Australian troops were both asked to storm the frontlines throughout the Great War. This battle, which lasted only moments is thought to have claimed the lives of no less than five thousand Australians and fifteen hundred British troopers.

It would take 94 years before the troopers were laid to rest in a cemetery, as they were initially buried in a mass grave but now lay to rest quietly at the Pheasant Wood Cemetery which is dedicated to their extraordinary sacrifices. Fromelles had been a combined effort by the British forces and those who were in Australian military troops which were known as the Australian Imperial Force.

It is thought to have been a failure since the attack itself was unsuccessful in the attempts to create a diversion for the enemy. Among the causes historians suggest it was a failure was because the troops were told to go forward in the light of day, which made them a target for the enemy as they were in clear view from the moment they went over the top.

Currently you will find in the Fromelles Australian Memorial Park a statue that honours the numerous courageous troopers that were seen carrying out the injured. One of those troopers Sergeant Simon Fraser from the 57 Battalion tells the tale of how he personally began carrying one of the injured and heard a weak voice asking for help who he helped pull to safety. Sergeant Fraser would later lose his life the following year as he battled in the Great War.

Learning good study habits is the ground where academic success stands. Applying good study habits will also help you better remember the materials. These simple guidelines were created to help you improve your school performance.

Steps you should take

Tidy up your work area. If possible, the area should also be quiet. If you are having trouble finding a quiet place to study, try the local library or park. Few places are as quiet as a library. The park is not going to be as quiet, but being out in the fresh air will help you learn. If you have no access to either of these places, you can try listening to soft music.

You should schedule a time to study every day. An hour of classroom work should be matched by two hours of home practice.

Try to stud for a period of 45 minutes, and then take a 15-minute break to relax. Setting short term goals, like sitting for 45 minutes, can raise your motivation.

If you have been able to meet your goals, reward yourself! One example could be to reward yourself after studying one full chapter. Examples of positive reinforcement are: food, exercise, videogames, etc.

Make correspondences between your class notes and your textbook. This way, if you missed something in class, it will be covered.

Think of questions about the chapter. This will help you identify areas that you don’t understand.

Try to use the new words and concepts you have learned. Information that’s being used is remembered more easily. This is especially true for language classes.

And, do one final review before you go to sleep. You will find that you will remember the words very strongly the next morning.

Big No-Nos

Procrastinate. Cramming is not beneficial for producing long term memory.

Highlight. Highlighting is a form of procrastination, because you are saving note taking for later. If you do that, you will end up having to pick up the book twice. Instead, make careful notes to compliment your classroom notes, along with page numbers so that you can refer back to the book if necessary.

Work on the computer. Who can resist the temptation of surfing or checking your e-mail?

The cell phone is on. No matter who is calling or texting you, usually it can wait 45 minutes. This can really disrupt your learning.

Study just after you have eaten. The brain slows down after you eat.

Get distracted. When you feel your mind begin to wander, remind yourself to concentrate. If you are reading, using your finger is a good way to keep your mind on track. The movement of your finger is enough to keep your mind engaged to see what the finger does.

The Diamond’s Cut. A diamond that is well-cut is stunning because of its brilliance. Of all the variables affecting the value of a diamond ring, the cut is the most crucial. The cut affects the diamond’s ability to reflect light. So when a diamond is well proportioned, light is reflected from every facet and dispersed through the top of the gem, creating a rainbow of color.

The Carat. The carat measures the weight of the diamond, not the size. One carat is subdivided into a hundred points. 1 carat is equal to 0.20 grams. Of the 4 Cs, the carat is the easiest to determine. Since one carat is divided into 100 points, then a diamond with 75 points would weigh 0.75 carats, and a diamond with 50 points would weigh 0.50 carats, and so on. The quality of a diamond greatly depends on its carat.

The Color. Diamond colors range from colorless to yellowish, and they are judged according to a grading scale that starts from D (totally colorless) to Z (vivid yellow). The colorless diamond is the most valuable because it is the rarest. The average stone carries an I or J grading for its color. Diamonds can also be in twelve other colors called Fancies, which would be very expensive.

The Diamond’s Clarity. Inclusions are minute natural birthmarks in a diamond that are only visible under a 10X magnification. Inclusions interfere with the dispersion of light and therefore the diamond’s brilliance gets reduced. The fewer and smaller the inclusions, the better the diamond.

While inclusions do not generally affect the diamond’s beauty and usually cannot be seen, their presence reduces the price. Clarity is graded on a scale with a range from internally flawless (IF), very small inclusions (VVS1-VVS2), very small inclusions (VS1-VS2), small inclusions (SI1-SI2) to imperfect (I1-I2-I3) with eye visible inclusions.
